Way back in 1976, twenty years after the
Department of Animal Husbandry,
Kerala
came into existence, a vaccine production unit
was started in Mannuthy in Thrissur
district. The major objective of this unit was
the production of prophylactic vaccines for use
in veterinary field. The unit, two years after
its humble beginning, was relocated to a 46 acre
scenic terrain, in Palode, just 35 kilometers
away from the state capital.
The
institute plays a major role in protecting
domestic animals and birds against major
infectious diseases that could be controlled by
vaccination. It is worth mentioning the fact
that the Tissue Culture Rinderpest (TCRP)
Vaccine manufactured and released from the year
1987 onwards paved the way for eradicating this
dreaded scourge from the state by 1997. The
institute manufactures four freeze dried
attenuated viral vaccines for use in poultry and
four bacterial vaccines for use in dairy
industry. These immuno-biologics are subjected
to rigorous in vitro and in vivo
testing protocols, in line with the current
international standards and supplied to the
farming community free of cost through a fine
network of veterinary service institutions
through out the state.
Laboratory animals like guinea pigs, rabbits,
white mice, chicks, ducks and small ruminants
are maintained here for testing the
products. The
products also include various reagents and
diagnostics. The campus extends over about 47
acres of land and consists of Main Laboratory
complex, R &D Laboratory, Standardization
Laboratory, Administrative Block,
Animal Breeding Station, Observation Sheds,
Autopsy and Incineration block and Residential
Quarters. .
